Where ReliaStar is today

Part of Voya, serviced by Resolution Life.

ReliaStar was once a stand-alone individual-life insurer. Today it sits inside a larger lineage (per Voya and Resolution Life):

01

Part of the Voya lineage

ReliaStar was acquired by ING, and it became part of Voya Financial when ING’s U.S. business rebranded as Voya in 2013. The ReliaStar name has carried forward within that organization.

02

In-force life now at Resolution Life

In 2021, Voya sold substantially all of its in-force individual life business to Resolution Life. So existing ReliaStar and Voya individual life policies are now serviced within the Resolution Life organization.

03

Policies honored

A change in who services a policy doesn’t change the policy itself. Existing ReliaStar coverage remains valid and is honored under its original contract terms — premiums, beneficiaries, and claims.

04

Now under Nippon Life

In 2024, Nippon Life agreed to acquire Resolution Life, becoming its parent. Nippon Life is one of the largest life insurers in the world, and that backing now sits behind these in-force policies.

If you own a ReliaStar policy

It’s honored. Let’s make sure it still fits.

Nothing about the move from ReliaStar to Voya to Resolution Life affects a policy you already own — it stays in force under its original terms, and Resolution Life services it. What’s worth doing is a quick check that it still matches your life: the right beneficiary, the right amount, and a clear picture of how it’s performing.

Often the answer is that you’re in good shape, and we’ll tell you so. If something needs attention, we’ll help you reach the servicer and sort it out.

A change in who services a policy doesn’t change the promise on a policy you already hold. We just make sure that promise still lines up with your life.

If you’re shopping for new coverage

Plenty of strong carriers are writing today.

Since ReliaStar isn’t a place to buy a new individual policy direct today, the useful next step is to compare the carriers that are writing new business. Term, whole life, or final expense — the right one depends on your age, your health, and what the coverage is for. A licensed professional lines up the ones that fit and shows you where each lands on price.

01Is ReliaStar still in business?

The ReliaStar name continues within the Voya and Resolution Life organization. ReliaStar was acquired by ING and became part of Voya Financial in 2013, and its in-force individual life policies are now serviced by Resolution Life. Those policies are honored under their original terms.

02Who services my ReliaStar policy now?

Resolution Life. In 2021, Voya sold substantially all of its in-force individual life business — which includes ReliaStar policies — to Resolution Life. Your premiums, beneficiary updates, and claims are handled within the Resolution Life organization, under the same contract terms you’ve always had.

03I have a ReliaStar policy — what should I do?

Keep it if it still fits your needs; it remains in force and is honored. It’s worth a free review to confirm the beneficiary is current, the coverage still matches your life, and the policy is performing as expected. A licensed professional can read it with you and help you reach the servicer if anything needs attention.

04Who owns ReliaStar and Resolution Life now?

In 2024, Nippon Life agreed to acquire Resolution Life, becoming its parent company. Nippon Life is one of the largest life insurers in the world. The ReliaStar lineage runs from ING to Voya in 2013, to Resolution Life for in-force individual life in 2021, and now under Nippon Life.

05Can I buy a new ReliaStar policy?

Not direct to consumers today. ReliaStar is not a place to buy a new individual policy now. For new coverage, the useful step is to compare carriers writing new business — term, whole life, or final expense. A licensed professional lines up the ones that fit you and shows you where each lands on price.

06Is my policy safe?

Your ReliaStar policy remains in force under its original terms. The change has been in who owns and services the business — from ING to Voya, then to Resolution Life for in-force individual life, now under Nippon Life — not in whether the coverage is honored. A free review can confirm where everything stands.
