What it does well
Strength you can feel good about.
Securian keeps a low profile for a company its size. Here is what earns it a place on the list when families compare permanent coverage.
A large, highly rated insurer
Securian writes coverage through Minnesota Life Insurance Company, one of the bigger life insurers in the country and among the top handful by life insurance in force, the kind of scale that matters when a claim is filed decades out.
In business since 1880
Minnesota Life traces back to 1880, the first life insurer in its home state. A long, unbroken track record is exactly what you want standing behind a lifelong promise.
Mutual-holding ownership
Minnesota Life sits under a mutual holding company, so the business is run with policyholders in mind rather than around a quarterly stock price. That structure often shows up in participating whole life.
A deep permanent-coverage shelf
Whole life, universal, indexed universal, and variable universal life all live here. If you want cash-value coverage designed to last for life, there is a lot to work with.
Strong in group and pension markets
Beyond individual policies, Securian is a major name in group and employer coverage and in pension-related life markets, a sign of an insurer built to pay obligations at scale.
A+ financial-strength rating
Minnesota Life carries an A+ (Superior) rating from AM Best, second highest of sixteen, the reassurance that the benefit is meant to be there when your family needs it.

Call (855) 809-1893What they offer
A plan for temporary, permanent, and care needs.
Securian’s shelf spans low-cost term through cash-value permanent coverage and a hybrid policy that folds in long-term care (per Securian):
Term life
Level term coverage
Level-premium term for a set number of years, the lowest-cost way to cover a mortgage or income-earning years, with conversion options to permanent coverage later.
Whole life
Participating whole life
Permanent coverage with a fixed premium and cash value that grows on a set schedule and can earn dividends, a common fit for lifelong needs and legacy goals.
Universal & IUL
Universal, indexed & variable
Flexible permanent coverage that builds cash value, including indexed universal life, one of Securian’s signature lines, plus fixed and variable universal options.
Hybrid LTC
SecureCare life + long-term care
A permanent policy with a long-term-care benefit built in, so the money can help pay for care or pass to your family, whichever you end up needing.
Indexed universal life is a signature line here. Those are permanent policies whose cash value grows based on a market index, with a floor that limits the downside. They reward careful design and proper funding, which is exactly the kind of thing worth a second set of eyes before you sign. Weighing lifelong coverage in general? Start with how whole life insurance works.
Financial strength
Rated to pay claims decades from now.
Minnesota Life, the Securian insurer, holds an A+ (Superior) financial-strength rating from AM Best, the second highest of sixteen levels, with a stable outlook as of December 2025. It also carries strong marks from S&P, Moody’s, and Fitch. Financial strength is simply a measure of an insurer’s ability to pay future claims, which is the whole point of buying a policy meant to last for life. You can look up the current rating yourself at AM Best or on Securian’s ratings page.
Is it a good fit?
A strong choice for permanent, cash-value coverage.
Securian tends to fit people who want lifelong coverage that also builds cash value, especially whole life or indexed universal life from a large, policyholder-owned insurer. The A+ rating and the long history since 1880 are the reassurance that the benefit is meant to be there when your family needs it.
If you mainly need affordable term coverage for a set number of years, Securian can still work, though plenty of carriers compete hard there. The only way to know it is your best value is to set it beside two or three others for your age and health. That comparison is free.
When an insurer this large is also this focused on permanent coverage, it earns a place on the list, especially for whole life or a well-designed IUL. We still compare it, because the right carrier is the one that fits your profile best.
Already have a policy?
Confirm you’re getting their best rate.
If you already hold a Securian or Minnesota Life policy, a licensed professional will read it with you and check whether the same premium could buy more elsewhere, or whether an indexed policy is funded the way it should be. With a carrier this strong, often you’re in good shape, and we’ll say so plainly.

01Is Securian the same as Minnesota Life?
They are two names for the same organization. Securian Financial is the brand you see in marketing, and Minnesota Life Insurance Company is the insurer that actually issues most of the life policies. In New York, coverage is issued by Securian Life Insurance Company instead. So a Securian policy and a Minnesota Life policy are backed by the same company.
02Is Securian life insurance good?
Yes, for many people. Securian, through Minnesota Life, is a large insurer that has been in business since 1880 and carries an A+ (Superior) rating from AM Best, second highest of sixteen. It offers a deep shelf of permanent coverage and is a major name in group and pension markets. Whether it is your best value still depends on your age and health versus a few other strong carriers.
03What does Securian offer?
Securian writes level term life plus a broad range of permanent coverage: participating whole life, universal life, indexed universal life (a signature line), and variable universal life. It also offers SecureCare, a permanent policy with a long-term-care benefit built in. That range covers everything from temporary needs to cash-value and care planning.
04How financially strong is Securian?
Minnesota Life, the Securian insurer, holds an A+ (Superior) financial-strength rating from AM Best, the second highest of sixteen levels, with a stable outlook as of December 2025. It also carries strong marks from S&P, Moody’s, and Fitch. You can confirm the current rating any time at ambest.com. Financial strength is a measure of an insurer’s ability to pay future claims.
05Is Securian a good fit for indexed universal life?
It is a carrier worth comparing for IUL. Indexed universal life is one of Securian’s deepest product lines, and these are policies that reward careful design and proper funding. The honest move is to set a Securian illustration beside one or two other A-rated carriers, because the right IUL is the one built correctly for your goals, not just the biggest name.
06How do I reach Securian customer service?
Existing policyholders can reach Securian through the number on their policy or at securian.com. If you would like someone to read your policy with you first, a licensed professional on our team can do that and help you contact the carrier.
