How to cancel American Income Life life insurance

Reviewed by Aleen Alnono, licensed insurance agent (NPN 58310472)Updated August 2026

To cancel an American Income Life policy, send American Income Life Insurance Company a signed, dated written request naming your policy number and the date you want coverage to end, then get written confirmation that the policy has terminated and billing has stopped. American Income Life is a Globe Life Inc. company, and many members also hold a separate, no cost group accidental death certificate through their union, credit union or association, which is a different contract from the individual policy you are cancelling.

American Income Life Insurance Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Globe Life Inc. and sells individual life, accident and supplemental health insurance policies, including through its New York subsidiary, National Income Life Insurance Company.

You may be holding two different things, not one

American Income Life is part of the Globe Life family of companies, and it commonly reaches people through their union, credit union, or professional association. Many members first encounter the company through a no cost group accidental death benefit certificate offered as a member benefit, at no charge to the member. A representative typically follows up to deliver that certificate in person, and the same visit is often when a separate, individual life insurance policy is discussed and, if the member chooses, purchased. The certificate and the policy are two different contracts, and cancelling one does not end the other. If a statement or a payroll deduction is billing you, the first practical step is figuring out which contract that charge actually belongs to. The no cost certificate has no premium to cancel, since there was never a charge for it, though you can still ask that it be discontinued. Only the paid, individual policy has premiums, possible cash value, and a formal cancellation process. Confirm which one you hold, and whether you hold both, before you write to anyone.

How to cancel, step by step

  1. Find your policy number. It is on the policy itself and on any statement. Work from your own documents rather than from a letter you were not expecting.
  2. Put the request in writing. Sign and date it, name the policy number, and state the exact date you want coverage to end. A phone call alone leaves you nothing to point at later.
  3. Say if you are inside the free-look window. If the policy is new, your state may entitle you to a full refund. Make that request explicit rather than assuming it is applied.
  4. Ask for written confirmation. You want the termination date and, if there is cash value, the amount being released. Keep it.
  5. Stop the payment last, not first. Only once the insurer has confirmed the policy has ended. Stopping the draft first creates a lapse rather than a cancellation, which is messier and can cost you the cash value.

What to check before you send it

These are the things people most often wish they had looked at first. None of them are reasons not to cancel. They are the difference between a decision and a regret.

When cancelling is the right answer

Cancelling the individual policy makes sense when the need it was bought for has passed, such as a debt that is now paid off or dependents who are grown, or when you are carrying more coverage than your household needs. Just remember that ending the paid policy does not touch a separate group certificate, so if you want both ended, say so specifically.

We will say this plainly, because it is the part most people never hear: sometimes the best thing you can do with a policy is keep it exactly as it is. A review that ends there is a successful review, and it costs you nothing to find out.

Common questions

How do I cancel an American Income Life policy?

Send American Income Life Insurance Company a signed, dated written request that includes your name, your individual policy number, and the date you want coverage to end, then ask for written confirmation that the policy has terminated and billing has stopped. Contact details for policy service are printed on your policy documents and statements.

I have a free accidental death certificate through my union or credit union. Does cancelling my individual policy end that too?

No. The group accidental death benefit certificate and an individual life insurance policy are separate contracts. Cancelling one does not cancel the other. If you want to end the certificate as well, say so separately, and since it carries no premium, there is nothing to stop billing on.

Is American Income Life the same company as Globe Life?

American Income Life Insurance Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Globe Life Inc., which also owns several other insurance brands. Your policy is issued and administered by American Income Life directly, so a cancellation request goes to American Income Life, not to a general Globe Life address.

Will I get money back if I cancel?

It depends on which policy you hold. Term coverage generally has no cash value, so there is usually nothing to return beyond unearned premium. Whole life coverage may have built cash surrender value, shown on your current statement, and any amount above what you paid in can be taxable.

A representative delivered my certificate in person and I bought a policy at that same visit. Is that normal?

Yes. American Income Life commonly delivers the no cost group certificate through a representative visit, and individual coverage is often discussed at that same appointment. The certificate itself has no cost regardless of whether you choose to buy anything else during the visit.

What if I only just bought the individual policy?

Every state gives new policyholders a free-look period, commonly ten to thirty days from delivery, during which you can cancel and have your premium returned. If you are inside that window, say so directly in your written request.
