How to cancel Transamerica life insurance

Reviewed by Aleen Alnono, licensed insurance agent (NPN 58310472)Updated August 2026

To cancel a Transamerica life insurance policy, send Transamerica Life Insurance Company a signed, dated written request that includes your policy number and the date you want coverage to end, then get written confirmation that the policy has terminated and billing has stopped. Transamerica has absorbed several other insurers over the decades, so check your policy for the company name that actually issued it before you write the letter.

Transamerica Life Insurance Company is a subsidiary of Aegon, a financial services group headquartered in the Netherlands, and in 2008 it absorbed Transamerica Occidental Life Insurance Company, one of several affiliated insurers merged into it over the years.

The name on your statement may not be the name on your original contract

Transamerica has spent decades absorbing other insurers into a single company. Transamerica Occidental Life Insurance Company, Transamerica Assurance Company, and other affiliated carriers were merged into Transamerica Life Insurance Company over the years, and their in force policies came with them. If you bought coverage in the 1980s or 1990s from a company whose name you barely remember, there is a real chance it is now serviced under the Transamerica name even though nothing you originally signed said Transamerica anywhere on it. That matters when you go to cancel. Looking for your policy under the carrier name on your old paperwork can come up empty, because the servicing company changed even though the contract terms did not. Before you write a cancellation letter, confirm the current issuing company and your policy number from a recent premium notice or statement, not from the folder you filed away when you first bought the policy. Sending a request under an outdated company name is one of the more common reasons these letters get delayed.

How to cancel, step by step

  1. Find your policy number. It is on the policy itself and on any statement. Work from your own documents rather than from a letter you were not expecting.
  2. Put the request in writing. Sign and date it, name the policy number, and state the exact date you want coverage to end. A phone call alone leaves you nothing to point at later.
  3. Say if you are inside the free-look window. If the policy is new, your state may entitle you to a full refund. Make that request explicit rather than assuming it is applied.
  4. Ask for written confirmation. You want the termination date and, if there is cash value, the amount being released. Keep it.
  5. Stop the payment last, not first. Only once the insurer has confirmed the policy has ended. Stopping the draft first creates a lapse rather than a cancellation, which is messier and can cost you the cash value.

What to check before you send it

These are the things people most often wish they had looked at first. None of them are reasons not to cancel. They are the difference between a decision and a regret.

When cancelling is the right answer

Cancelling makes sense when the coverage no longer matches what you need, when a less expensive policy can replace it without a health question you cannot answer well, or when the premium is competing with more pressing bills. It makes less sense to give up a decades-old policy purely out of confusion about which company now services it. Confirm what you actually hold before you let it go.

We will say this plainly, because it is the part most people never hear: sometimes the best thing you can do with a policy is keep it exactly as it is. A review that ends there is a successful review, and it costs you nothing to find out.

Common questions

How do I cancel a Transamerica life insurance policy?

Send Transamerica Life Insurance Company a signed and dated written request with your full name, policy number, and the date you want coverage to end. Ask for written confirmation that the policy has terminated and that billing has stopped. The address and contact details for policy service are printed on your policy documents and statements.

Why does my policy show a different company name than Transamerica?

Transamerica has merged several affiliated insurers into itself over the decades, including Transamerica Occidental Life Insurance Company. If you bought your policy long ago from one of those companies, it may now be serviced under the Transamerica name even though your original contract never mentions Transamerica.

Is Transamerica the same company as my 401(k) provider at work?

It can be the same corporate family. Transamerica runs a large workplace retirement and benefits business alongside its individual life insurance business. A life insurance policy and a 401(k) balance are separate products with separate cancellation and withdrawal rules, so confirm which one you are dealing with before you contact anyone.

Will I get money back if I cancel my Transamerica policy?

It depends on the product. Term life insurance typically has no cash value to return. Whole life and index universal life policies can have built up cash value, which is paid out on surrender and may be partly taxable. Your most recent statement shows whether your policy has a cash value and what it is currently worth.

What happens if I just stop paying my Transamerica premium?

Missed payments do not cancel a policy on their own. Most policies enter a grace period, and if the premium still is not paid, the policy lapses instead of being formally cancelled. A lapse can affect any cash value and does not give you the written confirmation a proper cancellation does, so it is worth doing it properly if you have decided to leave.

Can I convert my Transamerica term policy instead of cancelling it?

Many Transamerica term policies, including the Trendsetter series, include a conversion option that lets you switch to permanent coverage without new health questions, within limits set by the contract. If your health has changed and that is the real reason you are considering cancelling, check whether converting is available before you give up the coverage entirely.
