How to cancel American Amicable life insurance

Reviewed by Aleen Alnono, licensed insurance agent (NPN 58310472)Updated October 2026

To cancel an American Amicable policy, complete the Policy Cancellation Request form that the group publishes on its website, sign it as the policy owner, attach a copy of valid photo ID, and send it using the instructions on the form. Then ask for written confirmation that the policy has ended and billing has stopped. Your policy may be issued by any of the group's five insurers, so use the company name printed on your own contract.

American Amicable Group states on its own site that it has been protecting policyholders since 1910 and lists five insurance companies in the group. Industrial Alliance, now iA Financial Group, announced in July 2010 that it had completed its purchase of American-Amicable Holding.

Five company names, one cancellation form

American Amicable is a group of five insurers, and the name printed on your policy decides which one holds your contract. The group lists American-Amicable Life Insurance Company of Texas, iA American Life Insurance Company, Occidental Life Insurance Company of North Carolina, Pioneer American Insurance Company and Pioneer Security Life Insurance Company. Its Policy Cancellation Request form carries all five names across the top, so a policy that says Pioneer Security or Occidental is in the right place. The form is more specific than most. It asks for the policy owner's name, date of birth and signature, which is not always the insured person. It says a request without a valid ID will not be processed, and that expired ID is not accepted. It asks whether you want any money due paid by direct deposit or by check, and whether to withhold taxes on any taxable gain. Start by finding out who the owner is. If a parent bought the policy for you, the signature that counts is the owner's, not yours.

How to cancel, step by step

  1. Find your policy number. It is on the policy itself and on any statement. Work from your own documents rather than from a letter you were not expecting.
  2. Put the request in writing. Sign and date it, name the policy number, and state the exact date you want coverage to end. A phone call alone leaves you nothing to point at later.
  3. Say if you are inside the free-look window. If the policy is new, your state may entitle you to a full refund. Make that request explicit rather than assuming it is applied.
  4. Ask for written confirmation. You want the termination date and, if there is cash value, the amount being released. Keep it.
  5. Stop the payment last, not first. Only once the insurer has confirmed the policy has ended. Stopping the draft first creates a lapse rather than a cancellation, which is messier and can cost you the cash value.

What to check before you send it

These are the things people most often wish they had looked at first. None of them are reasons not to cancel. They are the difference between a decision and a regret.

When cancelling is the right answer

Cancelling is a sound decision when the coverage no longer fits. That might be a policy you have outgrown, a second policy doing the same job as one you prefer, or a premium that no longer fits your budget when other arrangements already cover the need. A review that ends with you keeping exactly what you have is also a good result, and we will say so plainly.

We will say this plainly, because it is the part most people never hear: sometimes the best thing you can do with a policy is keep it exactly as it is. A review that ends there is a successful review, and it costs you nothing to find out.

Common questions

How do I cancel an American Amicable life insurance policy?

The group publishes a Policy Cancellation Request form on its website. Fill it in with the policy number, the insured's name and the owner's details, choose how any money due should be paid, sign as the owner, and attach valid ID. The form says a request without ID will not be processed. Send it using the instructions printed on the form, then ask for written confirmation that the policy has ended.

Which company do I address the request to?

The one named on your policy. American Amicable Group includes American-Amicable Life Insurance Company of Texas, iA American Life Insurance Company, Occidental Life Insurance Company of North Carolina, Pioneer American Insurance Company and Pioneer Security Life Insurance Company. The cancellation form is written for all five, so the same form works, but use the issuing company's name when you follow up.

What ID does the form ask for?

A valid form of identification, such as a state ID, driver's license or passport. The form states that expired documents will not be accepted and that a request without ID will not be processed. Read the current version of the form for the full list before you send it.

Will I get money back when I cancel?

The form says any policy values due are returned based on the terms and conditions of the policy contract. If your policy has cash surrender value, that is what is paid. A term policy usually has none. The form lets you choose direct deposit or a mailed check, and says a taxable gain is reported to the IRS with a 1099-R mailed the following January.

Can I check my policy before I decide?

Yes. The American Amicable site has a My Account area for viewing policy details and account status, and a page for uploading service requests. Looking at your current coverage amount and premium first takes a few minutes and can change your mind in either direction.

What if I only just bought the policy?

State law gives new policyholders a free-look period, commonly ten to thirty days from delivery, during which you can cancel and have your premium returned. Some states allow a longer window, for example for older buyers or replacement policies. The exact length is printed on your policy. If you are inside it, say so in your written request.
