How to cancel American General life insurance

Reviewed by Braxton Mondell, licensed insurance agent (NPN 22045329)Updated July 2026

To cancel an American General life insurance policy, send a signed, dated written request with your policy number and the date you want coverage to end, and ask for written confirmation of the termination. American General now sits inside Corebridge Financial, so correspondence and statements may carry the Corebridge name even though your policy and policy number have not changed.

American General is a long-standing life insurance brand that now sits inside Corebridge Financial, the company formerly known as AIG Life and Retirement.

The name on the letter may not match the name on your policy

This is the most common source of confusion with American General policies, and it is worth understanding before you send anything. The business moved under Corebridge Financial, which was previously AIG Life and Retirement. Policyholders who bought from American General, or years earlier from AIG, often receive correspondence branded differently from the policy in their filing cabinet, and reasonably wonder whether the mail is genuine or whether their coverage changed hands without their agreement. Your contract did not change. The company servicing it was renamed and reorganised. Practically, that means two things: use the policy number from your own documents rather than assuming a new one, and if a letter looks unfamiliar, verify it against a statement you already hold rather than against the letter itself.

How to cancel, step by step

  1. Find your policy number. It is on the policy itself and on any statement. Work from your own documents rather than from a letter you were not expecting.
  2. Put the request in writing. Sign and date it, name the policy number, and state the exact date you want coverage to end. A phone call alone leaves you nothing to point at later.
  3. Say if you are inside the free-look window. If the policy is new, your state may entitle you to a full refund. Make that request explicit rather than assuming it is applied.
  4. Ask for written confirmation. You want the termination date and, if there is cash value, the amount being released. Keep it.
  5. Stop the payment last, not first. Only once the insurer has confirmed the policy has ended. Stopping the draft first creates a lapse rather than a cancellation, which is messier and can cost you the cash value.

What to check before you send it

These are the things people most often wish they had looked at first. None of them are reasons not to cancel. They are the difference between a decision and a regret.

When cancelling is the right answer

If the policy was bought to cover an obligation that no longer exists, if you hold overlapping coverage from more than one carrier, or if a term policy is reaching the end of a level period and the need has genuinely passed, ending it can be the right decision.

We will say this plainly, because it is the part most people never hear: sometimes the best thing you can do with a policy is keep it exactly as it is. A review that ends there is a successful review, and it costs you nothing to find out.

Common questions

How do I cancel an American General life insurance policy?

Send a signed, dated written request that includes your name, the policy number from your own documents, and the date you want coverage to end. Ask for written confirmation that the policy has terminated. Policy service contact details appear on your policy and on your statements.

Is American General the same company as Corebridge?

American General now sits inside Corebridge Financial, which was formerly AIG Life and Retirement. Your policy and policy number did not change when the business was reorganised, which is why correspondence may carry a name that differs from the one printed on the contract you signed.

I received a letter from a company I do not recognise. Is my policy still valid?

Rebranding and reorganisation are common in life insurance, and a renamed servicer does not change the terms of your contract or your beneficiary. Rather than acting on an unfamiliar letter, check the policy number against a statement you already hold, and use the contact details on your own policy documents to confirm.

Will cancelling my term policy give me any money back?

Generally no. Term life insurance provides coverage for a set period and does not build cash value, so there is usually nothing to return beyond unearned premium. Permanent coverage is different: surrendering releases the current cash surrender value, and any amount above the premiums you paid can be taxable.

What is a conversion option and why does it matter here?

Many term policies include the right to convert some or all of the coverage to a permanent policy without answering new health questions. That right lasts only until a deadline set in the contract. Cancelling the term policy ends the option too, which is worth knowing if your health has changed since you applied.

Will my coverage end the day I ask to cancel?

Not usually. Most life insurers end coverage on the next premium due date or on the date they process a signed request, whichever the contract specifies. That gap matters, because until the policy actually terminates you are still covered. Never treat a phone call as the end of it: confirm the termination date in writing and keep the confirmation.

Should I just stop paying instead of cancelling?

It is simpler than it looks to do this badly. Stopping payment starts the grace period, and if the policy has cash value the insurer may keep it in force by taking loans against that value, which can quietly drain it. A written request creates a clean, dated record of what you asked for and when. Cancelling on purpose is always tidier than lapsing by accident.
