To cancel a Lumico life insurance policy, the policy owner sends the request to Lumico by phone or by email. Lumico's help center says an emailed request has to come from the same email address listed for the owner on the policy. If you cancel within 45 days of the issue date, Lumico says it will refund your payments with no questions asked. Ask for written confirmation that the policy has ended.
Lumico states on its own website that it is no longer accepting new applications and that this does not impact current customers, and it runs separate customer portals for life insurance and health insurance.
Lumico no longer sells new policies, so cancelling is a one-way door
Most carriers will happily sell you a policy again if you change your mind. Lumico will not, because it is no longer accepting new applications. Its site says this does not impact current customers, so your coverage and servicing carry on. But it changes the decision. If you cancel a Lumico policy, getting that same coverage back is not an option, and any replacement comes from another company, priced on your age and health today. The second thing is the rules for leaving. Lumico's help center says it accepts cancellation requests by phone or email. It says only the policy owner can ask, which is usually the insured unless you requested an owner change. It says an emailed request must come from the owner's address as listed on the policy. And it says payments are refunded, no questions asked, if you cancel within 45 days of the issue date, while refunds are typically available only inside that window. So timing matters. Inside 45 days you get your payments back. After it, cancelling simply ends the coverage going forward.
How to cancel, step by step
- Find your policy number. It is on the policy itself and on any statement. Work from your own documents rather than from a letter you were not expecting.
- Put the request in writing. Sign and date it, name the policy number, and state the exact date you want coverage to end. A phone call alone leaves you nothing to point at later.
- Say if you are inside the free-look window. If the policy is new, your state may entitle you to a full refund. Make that request explicit rather than assuming it is applied.
- Ask for written confirmation. You want the termination date and, if there is cash value, the amount being released. Keep it.
- Stop the payment last, not first. Only once the insurer has confirmed the policy has ended. Stopping the draft first creates a lapse rather than a cancellation, which is messier and can cost you the cash value.
What to check before you send it
These are the things people most often wish they had looked at first. None of them are reasons not to cancel. They are the difference between a decision and a regret.
- Whether you are the policy owner. Lumico says only the owner can request cancellation. If someone else bought the policy for you, or the owner has changed, sort that out first. An emailed request has to match the owner's email address on the policy.
- How long ago the policy was issued. Lumico's help center describes a 45 day refund window from the issue date. Find the issue date on your policy schedule and count from there. Past that point, refunds are typically not available.
- Which Lumico product you hold. Lumico's site lists Protect Now Term, whole life, simplified issue final expense and Medicare supplement coverage. Life insurance and health insurance each have their own customer portal. Ending a Medicare supplement is a different decision from ending life insurance, so identify yours before you act.
- What replacing the coverage would take. Lumico is closed to new applications, so replacement means a different company and a fresh application. Get that answer first. Do not end the Lumico policy until the new one is approved and in force.
- Whether a cash value or a beneficiary needs attention first. A whole life policy may hold cash value, and your statement shows the current figure. If you decide to keep the policy, this is also a good time to confirm your beneficiary is up to date.
When cancelling is the right answer
Cancelling is the right call when the coverage no longer matches your life, or when you already hold better coverage that is approved and in force. Because Lumico is closed to new business, the key is to avoid a gap: keep it until the replacement is confirmed. And if the review shows what you have still fits, keeping it is a perfectly good outcome.
Common questions
How do I cancel a Lumico life insurance policy?
Lumico's help center says it accepts cancellation requests by phone or email. The request has to come from the policy owner. If you email, use the same address that is listed for the owner on the policy. Ask Lumico to confirm in writing that the policy has been cancelled and when coverage ended.
Can a family member cancel for me?
Lumico says cancellation requests may only be made by the policy owner. The owner is typically the same person as the insured unless an owner change was requested. If you are helping a parent, the owner generally needs to make the request, or you need to ask Lumico what it requires for someone acting on the owner's behalf.
How long do I have to get a refund?
Lumico's help center says that if you cancel within 45 days of the policy's issue date, it will refund the payments made into the policy with no questions asked. It also says refunds are typically only available if cancellation is requested inside the free-look period. Your policy also prints its own free-look wording, so check the two against each other.
Lumico is not taking new applications. Is my policy still good?
Lumico's site says that no longer accepting new applications does not impact current customers. Your policy stays in force as long as you keep paying the premium, and the contract terms do not change because the company stopped selling. Closing to new sales and ending existing policies are separate things.
I have a Lumico Medicare supplement, not life insurance. Is this guide for me?
Only in part. Lumico has a separate customer portal for health insurance, and ending a Medicare supplement is a different decision from ending a life policy. It is worth talking it through before you act, because your options after cancelling depend on rules outside this page. We are glad to help you think it through, at no cost.
Where do I log in to see my policy?
Lumico has a life insurance customer portal and a separate health insurance customer portal. Use the one that matches your policy. Reviewing your coverage amount, premium and issue date there takes a few minutes and tells you whether you are still inside the 45 day window.
