How to cancel USAA life insurance

Reviewed by Aleen Alnono, licensed insurance agent (NPN 58310472)Updated October 2026

To cancel a USAA life insurance policy, contact USAA directly through usaa.com or the service contact on your policy, tell them which policy you want ended and the date, and get the termination date confirmed in writing. USAA says its life policies may carry contractual obligations before termination, so a life policy is not cancelled the way a USAA renters or auto policy is. Your life coverage is issued by USAA Life Insurance Company, or in New York by USAA Life Insurance Company of New York.

USAA's website says life insurance and annuities are provided by USAA Life Insurance Company of San Antonio, Texas, and in New York by USAA Life Insurance Company of New York, and that USAA Life was founded in 1963.

USAA is one membership with several separate companies, and life has its own rules

Most USAA members hold more than one product, and it is easy to assume that ending one works like ending another. It does not. USAA's own page on policy termination splits them into groups. Bank accounts have their own closure steps. Auto, umbrella and similar property and casualty policies are ended by contacting USAA, and a second home or renters policy can sometimes be ended on the policy summary page online. Life policies sit in a separate group. USAA says life policies may be subject to contractual obligations before termination, and that closing certain life policies may involve early termination penalties or loss of cash value. That wording matters if you own a permanent policy. It also helps to know who is on the other side of the contract. USAA's website says life insurance and annuities come from USAA Life Insurance Company, or USAA Life Insurance Company of New York, and that other life and health products offered through USAA Life General Agency come from select companies. Look at the insurer name on your policy schedule before you call. It tells you whose contract you are ending, and cancelling a USAA auto policy or leaving the bank does nothing to a life policy. Each is handled separately.

How to cancel, step by step

  1. Find your policy number. It is on the policy itself and on any statement. Work from your own documents rather than from a letter you were not expecting.
  2. Put the request in writing. Sign and date it, name the policy number, and state the exact date you want coverage to end. A phone call alone leaves you nothing to point at later.
  3. Say if you are inside the free-look window. If the policy is new, your state may entitle you to a full refund. Make that request explicit rather than assuming it is applied.
  4. Ask for written confirmation. You want the termination date and, if there is cash value, the amount being released. Keep it.
  5. Stop the payment last, not first. Only once the insurer has confirmed the policy has ended. Stopping the draft first creates a lapse rather than a cancellation, which is messier and can cost you the cash value.

What to check before you send it

These are the things people most often wish they had looked at first. None of them are reasons not to cancel. They are the difference between a decision and a regret.

When cancelling is the right answer

Cancelling makes sense when the need behind the policy is gone. The mortgage is paid, the children are on their own, or you have new coverage that is in force and you do not want to pay for two. A term policy builds no savings, so there is little to weigh once the need has passed. A permanent policy deserves a closer look first, because cash value, loans and surrender charges change the math. We are glad to read the contract with you. Sometimes the answer is to keep it.

We will say this plainly, because it is the part most people never hear: sometimes the best thing you can do with a policy is keep it exactly as it is. A review that ends there is a successful review, and it costs you nothing to find out.

Common questions

How do I cancel a USAA life insurance policy?

Contact USAA through usaa.com or the service contact printed on your policy documents and ask to end the life policy, naming the policy and the date you want coverage to stop. USAA's website says life policies may be subject to contractual obligations before termination, so ask what applies to yours. Then get the termination date confirmed in writing and keep it with your records.

Can I cancel my USAA life insurance online like my renters policy?

Not necessarily. USAA's policy termination page says an additional USAA home or renters policy may be terminated on the policy summary page online, but it puts life company policies in their own group and points you to a USAA insurance professional. Treat the life policy as its own request and do not assume the online option applies.

Is there a fee to cancel USAA term life insurance?

USAA's advice articles say term policies typically do not have a surrender charge or penalty for termination, and that cancelling a term policy is generally straightforward. Your contract is the final word, so check it. Term also builds no cash value, so there is no cash to receive when you end it.

What happens to the cash value if I cancel a permanent USAA policy?

Cancelling a permanent policy is called surrendering it. USAA describes this as returning the policy to the insurer in exchange for any remaining cash value. It also says closing certain life policies may involve early termination penalties or loss of cash value, and that permanent policies can carry long windows with a penalty. Look at the surrender schedule in your contract and at any loan balance first.

Is there a free look period on a USAA life policy?

Every state sets a free look period, which is a window after you receive a new policy when you can return it and get your premium back. The length differs by state and by policy type, and the exact number of days is printed on your policy. We did not find a single USAA wide number on its public pages, so check your own policy information page. Our free look guide explains how it works.

Will cancelling life insurance affect my USAA membership or other policies?

USAA's website treats bank accounts, property and casualty policies and life policies as separate groups with their own steps. Ending your life policy is a separate request. Whether it changes anything about the other products you hold is a question for USAA, so ask when you make the request.

What if my USAA term policy is ending rather than something I want to cancel?

You may not need to do anything. USAA says most of its term policies let you continue coverage beyond the initial term, usually with a premium increase, a decrease in coverage or both, and that some level term policies can convert to permanent coverage while the conversion option period is open. Check My Documents before the end date, because the decision may be to convert or extend, not cancel.

Will my coverage end the day I ask to cancel?

Not usually. Most life insurers end coverage on the next premium due date or on the date they process a signed request, whichever the contract specifies. That gap matters, because until the policy actually terminates you are still covered. Never treat a phone call as the end of it: confirm the termination date in writing and keep the confirmation.
